I.          MESSAGE FROM CABA

I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July weekend and are enjoying your summer vacations with your family and friends.  This summer your CABA Board continues to move forward to achieve each of the goals we set forth in January.

Since the last issue of ¿Que Pasa CABA? , we celebrated “El Dia Del Abogado” at a reception sponsored by TotalBank.  CABA together with Los Colegios de Abogados de Cuba and la Sociación Cubano-Española de Derechos drafted a proposed Transitional Law which was presented that evening by the CABA onCuba Committee. CABA shared its work product  with the leading dissident group of lawyers in CUBA, la Corriente Agramontista who CABA continues to support in their efforts to protect human rights and promote a transition to democracy.  CABA was honored to have a recording from Rene Gomez Manzano, who leads La Corriente Agramontista.

Please take a few minutes to listen to the recording. Click here.  I would like to personally thank Eduardo Palmer, Pedro Freyre and Jaime Perez, as well as other members of the CABA on Cuba Committee for the countless hours that they have committed to these projects.

In its continued efforts to educate our members, as well as our community, on the upcoming elections, CABA has prepared several programs.  First, CABA held its State Legislative Luncheon on June 30th.  Our members were able to meet and listen to the candidates who, if elected, will represent us in Tallahassee.  A special thank you to Vivian De Las Cuevas-Diaz, Isabel Diaz and Jenny Perez who organized this luncheon.

Second, during the month of July, CABA will be working with Democracia USA in assisting members of our community in registering to vote for the upcoming elections.  CABA is also working with the Broward Hispanic Bar Association on a number of events to educate the public on the importance of judicial elections.  This year, these efforts are critical, as every minority judge has opposition.

On August 12, CABA will host its Annual Judicial Luncheon.  We hope you have completed the CABA Judicial Poll.  If you have not, please do so before Friday.  CABA will be publishing the poll in a number or periodicals, and will also distribute it during various community events.

We hope you will continue to stay involved this Summer.  If at any time you have any questions comments or concerns, please feel free to call or e-mail me.

Manuel A. Garcia-Linares
President
