I. MESSAGE FROM CABA

I hope you enjoyed the Easter holidays and spring break vacations with your family.

You will soon be receiving the first quarter issue of our CABA Briefs.  In the upcoming issue, I

set forth CABA's three goals for this year.

One of CABA's goals is to assist members of our community and to provide

scholarships to deserving students.  Along those lines, as attorneys we have an obligation to

mentor students and new lawyers and instill in them the same values that were instilled in us

by the founders of CABA.  To that end, CABA had its annual Mentor/Mentee luncheon on Friday,

April 16th. CABA would like to thank all of our members who attended, and have agreed to

mentor a student during the year. We also thank the Honorable Leslie Rothenberg, who

provided an inspirational speech on why it is important to be a mentor, and TotalBank for

sponsoring the luncheon as well as partnering up with CABA on other events this year.

CABA also co-sponsored the YWCA Court Care Cocktail Party which was a complete

success.  Thanks to the Annual Court Care Cocktail Party, a third facility to take care of

children while their parents are in judicial proceedings is currently in the works.

Lastly, members of CABA's Legislative Committee travelled to Tallahassee during

Dade Days to meet with members of our legislature relating to the funding of CABA's Pro Bono

Project as well as legislation which affects our members. I am happy to report that the trip

was a success and am hopeful that CABA's Pro Bono project will be funded again this year.

If at any time you have any questions comments or concerns, please feel free to

call or e-mail me.

                                                                          Manuel A. Garcia-Linares

                                                                          CABA President

IV.  MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

The Honorable Katherine Fernandez Rundle and the State Attorney's Office were selected to receive a tribute during the National Crime Victims Rights' Week in Coral Gables for exceptional work on behalf of innocent crime victims.

Congratulations to  Marlene Quintana for being selected by the Miami Herald as one of 20 Successful Professionals Under 40 for her efforts in growing CABA's scholarship and lobbying programs as well as her work with Miami Bridge, a shelter for troubled youth and their families. Full Article can be found at: http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/04/25/1595452/20-successful-professionals-under.html

Congratulations to Monica Gordo, a former member of the CABA Board of Directors, who received the "Justice for All" award from the Attorney General's Office and the City of Coral Gables Police Department.    This award recognizes individuals who are committed to serving the victims of crime in Miami-Dade County.  She accepted the award on April 19 at the Biltmore Hotel as a part of National Crime Victim Rights' Week.

Judge Lisa Walsh was elected to The Board of the National Association of Women Judges representing Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Together with Judges Gladys Perez, Myriam Lehr and Nushin Sayfie, NAWJ will be programming in the Southeast Region on international trade, business and human rights issues.

Congratulations to Wilfredo Ferrer who has just been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next U.S. Attorney for South Florida. The Senate voted unanimously for Ferrer, a one-time federal prosecutor in Miami and senior aide to former Attorney General Janet Reno. He most recently oversaw federal litigation for the Miami-Dade County Attorney's Office. Ferrer will be in charge of 460 employees along Florida's east coast and responsible for a region stretching from Vero Beach to Key West. The U.S. Attorney's Office prosecutes a wide range of federal crimes and also handles civil cases.

Congratulations to the Our Lady of Lourdes Academy Constitution Team who won the state "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" Competition on Jan. 8, 2010. The team advanced to the national competition in Washington, D.C., which took place April 24-27, to represent Florida. After dedicating nearly 30 hours a week all year to cramming the ins and outs of the Constitution, the Lourdes team snagged a seventh place finish out of more than 50 teams in the finalist round. CABA is a proud sponsor and supporter of the Constitution Team.
