Well, believe it or not, Summer is here! We hope you all enjoyed this past Memorial Day Weekend with your families and are preparing for your upcoming summer vacations. CABA continues to shine as the premier voluntary bar association in the state of Florida. Since the last issue of ¿Que Pasa CABA, we co-sponsored the Red Mass and the National Association for Women Lawyers’ Night of Giving. We hope you all enjoyed our very own CABA Member Appreciation Happy Hour at Segafredo’s Brickell. CABA also sponsored the 2nd place prize for Law Day and I was fortunate enough to present the check to the second place essay winner, Nicholas Russo, a student at Doctor's Charter School at Miami Shores. Finally, Sandra Ferrera and Annie Hernandez represented CABA during the annual Hands on Miami Service Juris Day at Citrus Grove Elementary School in Little Havana. Each of our events was extremely well attended by CABA members. I encourage you to review the upcoming list of CABA events and to place them on your calendars. It is your Board’s goal to continue to add value to your CABA membership. Florida Bar President Jesse Diner invited me to attend a meeting at his office with Broward Chief Judge Tobin, and later the Broward County Bar Association Luncheon. During the luncheon, I had an opportunity to discuss the Broward Judicial Elections with Judge Tobin. For those of you that may have not read the recent articles, every minority Judge in Broward County has opposition this year. During the last set of elections, every Hispanic Broward Judge was opposed and defeated. CABA has committed to assist our friends in Broward County. You will soon receive an invitation to attend a reception in Broward on June 11 to support each of the minority judges. We hope you will join your Board in our effort to demonstrate the importance of having a diverse judiciary in every Circuit of the state of Florida. As I mentioned last month, CABA’s Legislative Committee traveled to Tallahassee during Dade Days to meet with members of our legislature to seek continued funding of CABA's Pro Bono Project. I am happy to report that despite the budget cuts, we were able to secure $50,000 from the Attorney General’s Budget. CABA’s Pro Bono Board recently had its first meeting and the following non CABA Board Members were appointed to the Pro Bono Board: Rogelio del Pino, Yara Lorenzo, Ralph MacNamara and Marlene Quintana. I would like to thank each of you for your support of CABA’s Pro Bono Project. Lastly, by now you should have received the Spring Issue of CABA Briefs. I would like to thank our new Editor In Chief for her dedication in completing this first issue. Ari, along with her Committee, is already hard at work on the next issue which will come out in July focused on the current immigration issues and the upcoming local, state and national elections. If at any time you have any questions comments or concerns, please feel free to call or e-mail me. Manuel A. Garcia-Linares II.
