The Harvard Law School Environmental Law & Policy Clinic
Clinic Fellow
Job Description
Start Date: August 2010
(Full-time; 1 year fixed term with possibility of renewal)
The Harvard Law School Environmental Law & Policy Clinic (ELPC) is accepting applications for a clinical fellowship to work on novel, cutting edge environmental law issues ranging from climate change and renewable energy to protection of water supplies and indoor air quality. The job is challenging, fast-paced, exacting, and time intensive, often requiring work at night or on weekends in order to properly supervise students, represent the clinic’s clients, and advance the clinic’s goals.
The fellow will work with the Clinic Director and Staff Attorney on a broad array of environmental and natural resource cases and projects and assist with the supervision of the students working in the clinic. The ELPC engages in a mix of litigation and administrative proceedings, legislative advocacy, rulemakings, and other policy work. Students working in the clinic help to develop novel strategies for addressing environmental problems, investigate new cases, advise clients, work with scientific, economic and policy experts, build and review administrative records, draft briefs and policy papers, and work on legislation and congressional testimony.
This fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for a lawyer to hone skills in public-interest lawyering and clinical teaching. The fellow’s responsibility will include: close supervision of student work; development of teaching and training materials; investigation and development of new clinic projects; basic and advanced legal research; drafting, review and editing of case and project documents; and, litigation of clinic cases in state and federal court and before administrative agencies. The fellow will be part of the intellectual community at Harvard Law School and will have opportunities to attend workshops and conferences. Given the demands of the job, however, the fellow should not expect to have time to engage in independent scholarly research and writing.
Applicants for the fellowship must have a demonstrated interest in environmental law, preferably including practice experience in the field, though other relevant litigation and/or administrative law experience, including participation in a clinical program or a judicial clerkship, will be considered. Applicants must possess outstanding academic credentials, as well as excellent research, writing and oral advocacy skills. Strong interpersonal and team-building skills are also required. Successful teaching and student supervision experience or the demonstrated potential for such teaching and supervision are desirable.
The fellow’s position includes certain Harvard benefits and a salary commensurate with other major public interest fellowship programs.
The Clinic Director seeks to fill this position during the summer of 2010 and will consider applications on a rolling basis.
Applicants should submit resumes online at http://www.employment.harvard.edu. Reference requisition number 21331BR.
Additionally, the following materials should be submitted with your online application. No phone calls please.
· A short statement (no more than 1000 words) describing relevant experience;
· Resume;
· Two writing samples (10 – 15 pages each);
· List of at least three references; and
· Law school transcript
