Luis Figueroa

Luis A. Figueroa was born in Havana, Cuba on March 8th, 1929. After completing his Baccalaureate studies in both the United States and Cuba, in 1951 he received a Doctorate in Civil Law from the University of Havana. Upon graduation, he became a Public Defender at the Appeals Court of Havana, Cuba from 1952 to 1954.

Through competitive examinations, Mr. Figueroa was awarded an Adjunct Professorship of Law at the University of Havana in 1952, where he remained until 1960. During that same time, he also practiced civil law at the Law Firm of Villoldo, Lluria y Medina in Havana, Cuba.

Mr. Figueroa came to the United States in 1961, where he worked as a Spanish teacher at Ransom School in Coconut Grove, Florida from 1962 to 1970. Commencing in 1967, and while still working full-time at Ransom, he attended Law School at the University of Miami; graduating with a Juris Doctor in 1970.

Since 1970, Mr. Figueroa has been in private practice in Miami, Florida and continues working to this day. He was a founding member of the Cuban American Bar Association and served as its fifth President from 1978 to 1979. Mr. Figueroa has also always remained active in the Cuban-American exile community; collaborating closely with its leaders in helping to define the future legal structure of a free Cuba.
